Trailer Hopping : Taken 2 Is Just Taken Repeated Too Soon

Rating: No Butter

Taken was about a retired CIA agent, Bryan, who risked his life to save his daughter, Kim, from Albanian kidnappers. Taken 2 is about a retired CIA agent, Bryan, who will risk his life to save his wife from the father of one of the Albanian kidnappers. Did you miss the difference? The difference is the synopsis says Bryan will also become a hostage, and his daughter Kim, will help save them; although there is nothing in the Taken 2 trailer indicating that Bryan will be captured.

Why do we need a second movie with the same story line and actors? Because 20th Century Fox said the first one did well, and Liam Neeson is still a bankable star.

Liam Neeson has become the go to person for low budget, invincible action hero movies ever since Taken started him on that path in 2008. Between that time, he has wrestled wolves, superheroes, Gods, aliens and now he is back to saving humans again. Will the audience finally get tired of his no-nonsense ass-kicking movies where he walks out unscathed every time? Not yet, although this storyline has already been done and too soon to be redone. Maybe it’s time for him to be a villain.

Since Taken and Taken 2 have the same premise, I will compare the 2nd to first, to see if it is worth watching. Taken has a realistic and for some, familiar and heart-felt subject surrounding the story – human trafficking of women for the sex trade. It highlighted the impact of human trafficking and provided some astounding figures to scare the crap out of people, hopefully young women traveling alone.

Taken 2 abandons any moral tale to draw the audience and depends on pure action, including the daughter leaping from building tops, fast-paced gun fun and angry exchanges between the two parties. It is simply a save the princess action movie where the knight in shining army will win in the end. The only twist may be that the mother did not survive, but we shall see.

Overall, Taken 2 is too simple and lacking in anything unique or worth looking forward to. It might help to capture that audience for Taken if they threw in some handsome young actor or two, or maybe a humor or two to lighten up the intensity a bit.

Taken 2 is scheduled to open on October 5, 2012. It stars the same cast as the first Taken, Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.
