Trailer Hopping : Oz the Great Not So Great

Rating: No Butter

Oz the Great and Powerful trailer is a humdrum adventure in a less psychedelic world similar to Tim Burton’s colorful Alice in Wonderland, especially with its massive teapots. The brightly colored floral and green fantasy land filled with gorgeous women, flying fetus looking monsters, and flying plants are an imaginative feast for the eyes, but the movie seemed to lack a strong tension building conflict and the characters appear too fragile and froufrou.

The trailer meshed too many genres of action, adventure, science fiction and fantasy into what could have been a simple fantasy movie about a wizard. The creatures resemble a dark science fiction movie confused in a more kid-friendly colorful fantasy world. The first colored scene in the trailer looked like an opening to a sci-fi movie, with its pastel green pasture, bright sun peaking in the horizon, blue sky covered in gray clouds and rock structures that resemble living objects from another world shielding the strange creatures underneath.

The vibrant flowers, trees and landscapes, beautiful palace, and a cute doll make a gorgeous fantasy land, but the creatures walked out of a sci-fi horror movie. The creatures are disturbingly cute and scary – a nude colored, bulgy eye flying dragon-like creature displays sharp, shark-like teeth made for eating humans; Orchid-like plant flies with large fluffy eyes, again, appear like dangerous creatures.

Scenes of army men, large masses of screaming people and fire could mean great action but again, a movie about a wizard gaining power status doesn’t require epic action. It requires a better trailer giving some hint about how a timid man becomes a great man and what his conflicts or battles are. It needs different scenes, other than showing smiling, stylishly dressed women, stating who and what the witches’ roles are. Otherwise, the movie appears like too many over-the-top scenes thrown together without a solid conflict and not very exciting to watch.

Oz the Great and Powerful is scheduled to open no March 8, 2013. It stars James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, Abagail Spencer, Joey King, Zach Braff and other cast members.
