Trailer Hopping : Man of Steel Lacks Fun Summer Blockbuster Vibe
Man of Steel trailer is a 1:34 minute teaser that states nothing more than the fact that superman can fly as fast as a rocket with overly conspicuous smoke tails. Eerie music fills the trailer with despair and solemn solitude, too dark and serious for a movie about a goofy guy who becomes Earth’s savior.
The trailer shows a film far less expensive than its close to $200 million budget and more reminiscent of a coming of age family drama recalling the life of an ordinary farm boy seeking bigger ambitions than being a fisherman. It shows scenes nostalgic of childhood memories, such as a child playing superman with mom’s homemade red sheet cape, complete with the boy’s best friend – the dog, or a man recalling an old photo of a boy winning a Science Fair prize smiling and standing proudly alongside his father.
The uncanny music feels too dark and lacking in lighthearted-fun; adding to that are contemplative and onerous voiceovers from the father figures that could lead to self-conflicted and bad decisions. Does that mean Superman will doubt his own persona and does not know if he should fight for good or evil? The whole trailer removed any sense of humor and fun out of Superman, which is often a nice break from the tense and action-packed comic book movies. Or maybe the setup is that it will not be a typical action packed comic book movie.
Although the ending scene where Superman shoots straight up in the air at the speed of light does indicate that he is back and there will be adventure. It would have been a decent ending scene to a crappy trailer if they didn’t throw in that triangular rocket smoke trail and jet contrail. He should be more of a man than a rocket, and does not need the drag lines to indicate his speed or power.
Man of Steel is scheduled to open during summer blockbuster season on June 14, 2013. It stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Laurence Fishburne, Jadin Gould, and others. With so many well-known actors, the film is either going to cover too much material, have too many flashbacks, or most of these actors are only appearing in minor roles.
