Trailer Hopping : Looper is An Interesting Twist

The concept of the Looper trailer is that there are specialized assassins called Loopers who kill targets from the future sent back 30 years to the Loopers through time travel. The dilemma is, Joe, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is tasked to kill a 30 year older version of himself – Bruce Willis. His troubles begin when he defies the rules of allowing a target to escape and become a target of himself and his bosses.

The premise is conceptually fascinating, and the trailer is high octane sci-fi with action packed supernatural activities of flying cars, tables and super human abilities. It looks like a superhero chase movie with ordinary humans in a less twisted cross between Keanu Reeves’ movies, like A Scanner Darkly mixed with the Matrix. Half of the trailer looks like a drug induced dream sequence and the other half is an action packed chase sequence with explosions, fires and quick release gunshots.

The movie focuses on the main story and focuses less on backgrounds, settings and high budget futuristic look and feel like the remake of Total Recall, which didn’t help the film much. Looper is set somewhere in the 2040’s to 2070’s, yet everything about the trailer feels more backward than forward. The diner looks like something out of a 80’s movie; the truck looks just as old; a group of young guys walking the streets in clothes and back-swept hair reminiscent of a 70’s film. The whole trailer looks old, dark and dirty, yet the story is simple enough to be entertaining.

What’s ambiguous is how these killed targets will not be missed in their future. “When they need someone gone and they wanna erase any trace that the target ever existed, they use specialize assassins like me, called Loopers.” Whether traveling forward or backward, eventually, someone will notice that the targets are gone and start looking for them. Someone has to start chasing down the mobsters eventually.

Although unclear how people will just disappear from the future, I like the simple, straight-forward storyline with a small cast, filled with action and without the fancy large armies and CGI’d lights and fanfare.

Looper is scheduled to open on September 28, 2012. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo, Noah Segan, Qing Xu and others.
