Trailer Hopping : Chernobyl Diaries Better Left Unfound

A catastrophic nuclear disaster site would have been great as a big budget sci-fi movie involving radiation that altered humans into other species or some other creative ideas of altered beings or aliens, instead of a low budget horror film about scaring six young and irresponsible Americans in the dark.

The Chernobyl Diaries trailer took too long to build to the horror sequences; it’s a two and a half minute trailer, yet the scaring didn’t start until a minute and a half later. It didn’t seem to leave enough time to build to how they went from being in a dead car to how they ended up inside an abandon building.

When that started, it was about illuminating random objects in the dark, like the doll, or casting shadows outlining human or other being forms, and showing faces using flashlights. There wasn’t enough suspense building time in each of these horror sequences to create something more frightening or threatening – something that would make me wait anxiously for something to pop out and make me jump out of my seat.

Who in their right mind would run out of a car in the middle of the night and into what could be radiation infested buildings? What happened to the tour guide? If something or someone killed him, why did they not call someone or try and use is car radio to call someone. Maybe the reason they didn’t show that part was because the whole thing could be a setup by the tour guide himself. In which case, it’s not a very entertaining hoax.

The title itself, Chernobyl Diaries, suggest records or evidences of killings or slaying found after the fact, like diaries of a radiation plant accident. The trailer is neither frightening nor solid or convincing story telling.

The Chernobly Diaries is scheduled to open on May 25, 2012. It stars Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski, Olivia Dudley, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Nathan Philips, Devin Kelley, Alex Feldman, Dimitri Diatchenko, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Kristof Konrad, among others.
