Trailer Hopping : A Bland Black and White Trailer Zero Dark Thirty

Rating: No Butter

If it weren’t for the good Oscar worthy buzz on this movie, I would never have written about the trailer for Zero Dark Thirty. Both trailers, the two minute something and the one minute something trailers seemed to be over dramatizations of a city map shown over intense music of a straight-forward and mundane ten year manhunt for a terrorist good at eluding his seekers.

The intense music probably added the an element of appeal for the Zero Dark Thirty trailer; although it does help that most people probably want to know how Osama bin Laden was captured and killed. The rest of it is just black and white text on picture or picture interwoven next to another scene.

The trailer starts with a black line, lining out text from beginning to end. Maps of the city streets were overwritten with movie text, such as “witness the greatest manhunt in history.” Black lines intersect to form certain building or areas of interest.

Besides the black lines drawn over the city map, other images were overlapping the city map as well – since this is a hunt for a man, the city map becomes the focal point for most scenes. Jessica Chastain’s silhouette against the back drop of an American flag was shown in the left corner against a map; x-ray images of suspects were shown with a map; and a man in an Afghan peraban tunban wardrobe was cast in white against the city map.

The trailer was a dry and boring outline of a city map, with some random outbursts and explosions. One dramatic line screamed a couple times was “where was the last time you saw Bin Laden!” There were some scenes of car explosions, fire and men hunting with infrared lights, and nothing else of interest.

I did like the “dirty” look and feel of the movie. The black and white, brown and dull hues add a realistic low tech and toughness to the movie. Other than that, the trailer is not enticing, although the subject matter is intriguing.

Zero Dark Thirty is scheduled to open in NY and LA on December 19, 2012 and scheduled to open wider on January 11, 2013. It stars Jessica Chastain, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Joel Edgerton, Mark Duplass, James Gandolfini, Scott Adkins, Taylor Kinney, Mark Strong, Jason Clarke and others.
