Trailer Hopping : The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Is Not Real Retirement Material

Rating: No Butter

It took me several viewings to understand the goal of this movie. “This is a new and different world. The challenge is to cope with it. And not just cope, but thrive.” After I got it, I couldn’t understand why any foreign retirees would be brave enough to risk it all and retiree in India without knowing anything about the country or culture.

The trailer centers on the British cast and the positive and optimistic view of the people and culture of India. What it doesn’t shed any light on is the unbearable weather conditions or cultural differences that could make or break the whole experience for newcomers. India has monsoons and terribly humid weather that could be harder to get used to than the nice colorful culture, beautiful smiles, and bright light as mentioned in the trailer by Tom Wilkinson.

Nothing against India -- I think India is a wonderful country to visit, but thought the movie would have been more believable if it were a story about a group of retirees testing out the waters of retirement in a foreign country rather than really investing their future in it without knowing much about it. Who does that during their retirement years? Sounds more like a risk taking bucket list item than an enjoyable and thoroughly researched thing to do.

Although the trailer appears humorous and entertaining, with some wonderful senior moments, like the answer to worrying about the danger of having sex at your age is “if she dies, she dies,” it glorifies India too much into a wonderful retirement oasis, without representing the complete picture of the culture, people, politics and environment.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is scheduled to open on May 4, 2012, alongside the most highly anticipated movie of 2012 – the Avengers. Is this an opportunity for those parents who don’t want to watch the Avengers to catch this? Again, who would want to fight with a movie theater full of eager young people? Not an experience I would look forward to, unless I’m looking forward to the Avengers.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel stars a stellar cast of more mature actors and some young talents – Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Penelope Wilton, Tena Desae, Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle.
