Battlefield America: A Downhill Dancing Movie

Hip-hop dance movies of the last decade have been entertaining with dance moves and techniques that probably inspired numerous future dancers or dreamers like me who would love to have that hidden talent no one knows about, but would never be able to learn any of it. (sigh) Over the years though, the dancing has taken center stage while the acting and storyline have become blase. The story is nothing more than a template for another underdog or down and out dancer(s) with something to prove or show.   More »

Chernobyl Diaries Better Left Unfound

A catastrophic nuclear disaster site would have been great as a big budget sci-fi movie involving radiation that altered humans into other species or some other creative ideas of altered beings or aliens, instead of a low budget horror film about scaring six young and irresponsible Americans in the dark.   More »

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Is Not Real Retirement Material

It took me several viewings to understand the goal of this movie. “This is a new and different world. The challenge is to cope with it. And not just cope, but thrive.” After I got it, I couldn’t understand why any foreign retirees would be brave enough to risk it all and retiree in India without knowing anything about the country or culture.   More »

Bernie is Unbelievable Humor That Kills

The funny thing about Bernie is that there should be nothing funny about murder; yet, the real circumstances surrounding Bernie, a movie based on a true homicide story, is comedic fun because it’s hard to believe the premise is actually a real life story. The one-sidedness of the story and how some people in one town, the town of Carthage, rallied support for a man who committed murder add to the humor. The trailer shows how funny it can be when emotion gets in the way of moral judgments.   More »

What to Expect When You're Expecting Is Due to Be Boring

I’d never thought someone would think of turning a self-help book into a movie. And, they’re doing it by applying the “let’s stick a bunch of big stars into the movie” formula like the recent holiday movies, ‘New Year’s Eve’ and ‘Valentine’s Day’. Except, this one isn’t about one holiday or about love; it’s about the it’s-all-about-me stereotypes of pregnant women. The stereotypes seemed to have gone too far with the What to Expect When You’re Expecting trailer.   More »

The Pirates Band of Misfits is Fast Paced, Fun Adventure

The Pirates Band of Misfits trailer is funny, very funny. Aardman knows how to do humor in animation. The pace is lightning fast and the action keeps on going. This is a fun and entertaining movie worth watching, although their work somehow doesn’t captivate the American audience.   More »

Chimpanzee Made for TV Watching

The trailer for Chimpanzee has beautifully shot footage of adorable cuddly chimps frolicking in luscious green forest. The sceneries look picturesque enough to be on the Discovery or National Geographic Channels on television. Anything beyond that seems like unnecessary excessiveness – like watching it on a big screen in the theaters.   More »

Think Like a Man Comedy Routines Turned Movie

Think Like A Man trailer is well put together; it sets up the premise of the movie nicely, introduces the main characters and their personality and issues, introduces the director and his credentials, sets up what to expect in the movie with the narration, and doesn’t have a lot of annoying black spaces between scenes. And, the movie is what you would expect from a Steve Harvey book – a two hour Steve Harvey stand-up routine.   More »

Zac Efron May be the Lucky One But Not in My Book

Another Nicholas Sparks movie. Think The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, Dear John, The Last Song and other successfully commercialized and sappy romance movies based on books by an author who knows how to strike the right heart strings of women. The Lucky One is another movie about the unexplainable and illogical fate of love – que sera sera. “I think he was meant to find that photo. I think it could happen for a reason.”   More »

Horror Fest - Lovely Molly, Detention, Keyhole, Apartment 143, Womb

Horror movies seemed to be all the craze lately, especially cheaply made horror films involving a shaky videocam and some screaming woman. Instead of writing a trailer review a week on the many horrors popping up like, Detention, Keyhole, Apartment 143 or Womb, I decided to lump them together and write it all as Lovely Molly. Granted, Lovely Molly does have some big marketing names behind the horror flick, like the director of Blair Witch Project or the executive producer to Lord of the Rings, it may be just the same as the rest of horror – a low budget cheap thrill.   More »

It’s hard to watch a trailer like the Giant Mechanical Man and not feel sorry for the leads. So much so that you want to go and cheer them on, and give them a reason to keep living and loving. Talk about introducing two characters who are down in the dumps and have been kicked too many times. “’What kind of complaints?’ ... ‘ She seems distracted and disinterested with her head in the clouds’… ‘So what you’re say is’… ‘You’re fired. That’s what I’m actually saying.’”   More »

Leave a movie about risking it all to defend one’s passion in the hands of a guy who makes solid entertainers about conflicts with money, violence/war and politics, such as Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK and Nixon, and you get an adrenaline rushed robbers versus robbers drama about love, money, drug wars and drug politics in Savages.   More »

Ah, Motown of the 60’s – the catchy, timeless music of talented and seductive singers like Diana Ross, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and many others; the smoky allure of extravagant and gaudy dresses of women’s groups along with their silky smooth hot iron pressed hair. Everything about the trailer is crispy clean and gorgeous – sharp clothes, glamorous faces, well-decorated homes and packed churches, and show rooms or bars filled with lights, glitz and bling.   More »

Pace Too Slow for Take This Waltz

The premise of this movie is both a turn-off and a perplexing conundrum, piquing my curiosity. Why would a happily married woman be looking for someone else, unless she really wasn’t happily married? Is the happiness just a façade or is she living in complete denial? These are the questions that the trailer for Take This Waltz doesn’t answer. What it does answer is that the movie seems to be a slow moving, melodramatic movie about exploring ones suppressed desires. Sarah Polley does a great job selecting the almost perfect cast in this movie.   More »
