In Life of Pi, Ang Lee captured the detail and mundane essence of life from a book about survival, solitude and hallucination using one of his best talents, the ability to transform each and every scene into meticulously colorful scenes that, at times, appear almost holy enough to hear a glorious church choir singing Hallelujah in the background. The trailer showed great focus on visuals and directionally focused on the audience seeing and feeling the spiritual beauty of Pi’s struggle for survival.   More »

Here Comes the Boom Sounds Funny Enough

The most interesting title for a 2012 movie goes to “Here Comes the Boom”. Ambiguous, yes, but cool -- as cool as an overweight, schlump like Kevin James fighting mix martial arts. And that’s the start of the fun.   More »

Taken was about a retired CIA agent, Bryan, who risked his life to save his daughter, Kim, from Albanian kidnappers. Taken 2 is about a retired CIA agent, Bryan, who will risk his life to save his wife from the father of one of the Albanian kidnappers. Did you miss the difference? The difference is the synopsis says Bryan will also become a hostage, and his daughter Kim, will help save them; although there is nothing in the Taken 2 trailer indicating that Bryan will be captured.   More »

The concept of the Looper trailer is that there are specialized assassins called Loopers who kill targets from the future sent back 30 years to the Loopers through time travel. The dilemma is, Joe, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is tasked to kill a 30 year older version of himself – Bruce Willis. Yeah baby! The Wu-Tang Clan is reuniting to create another awesome hip-hop song and music video filled with sex, violence and martial arts. This time the party will last 90 minutes and the title track is The Man With the Iron Fists presented by Quentin Tarantino. The "presented by" on a U.S. film involving martial arts makes me go into the trailer with very low expectations.   More »

The Big Wedding is Crap; Yes, I Said Crap

The only reason I’m writing about The Big Wedding is because it has an all-star cast, although before watching the trailer, I started with very low expectations. Why? Because the poster looks like a pretentious and meaningless wedding movie that makes no sense. And after watching the trailer? OMG. Send this movie directly to DVD please. There is nothing that spells big screen in this trailer. When a trailer leads to more story questions than excitements or answers, it’s time to stop throwing more marketing dollars at it.   More »

A Trailer as Plain as It's Title: This is 40 Disappoints

This Is 40 trailer is a Judd Apatow comedy that pokes fun of married life, tween children and work, using depressing, loveless and sarcastic humor about killing your spouse, aging and children entering puberty.   More »

Cloud Atlas is a Massive Undertaking that's Light on Entertainment

The Cloud Atlas trailer, at five minutes and 42 seconds, is a complicated, visually appealing scene after scene of interwoven unrelated stories unfolding and refolding into a purpose or theme that I can’t quite appreciate on film. I am not familiar with the book or its general ideas, but from the first minute and a half of explanations, I gather they’re multiple stories telling how life is circular from one generation to the next. Some of the voice-over explanations are:   More »

Django Unchained is another Tarantino violent film laced with dark humor and dressed loosely as a Western. The trailer shows plenty of gun slinging action, sharp wit one-liner conversations and actors having fun with their characters.   More »

Man of Steel Lacks Fun Summer Blockbuster Vibe

Man of Steel trailer is a 1:34 minute teaser that states nothing more than the fact that superman can fly as fast as a rocket with overly conspicuous smoke tails. Eerie music fills the trailer with despair and solemn solitude, too dark and serious for a movie about a goofy guy who becomes Earth’s savior.   More »

Oz the Great Not So Great

Oz the Great and Powerful trailer is a humdrum adventure in a less psychedelic world similar to Tim Burton’s colorful Alice in Wonderland, especially with its massive teapots. The brightly colored floral and green fantasy land filled with gorgeous women, flying fetus looking monsters, and flying plants are an imaginative feast for the eyes, but the movie seemed to lack a strong tension building conflict and the characters appear too fragile and froufrou.   More »

James Bond and Skyfall - Movie Looks As Expected, Trailer Sucks

The Skyfall teaser trailer to the next installment of a long movie franchise – Bond, James Bond is unimpressively annoying. It flashes couple second scenes played to annoying double gunshot “dun-dun” sounds, and ended with only 15 seconds of good Bond action. Though these couple second bits neither build plot anticipation nor excitement for the movie, it does show a high gadgetry, high tech/CGI and beautifully shot Bond movie with its core intact -- a movie full of action, explosions, gun shots and of course, beautiful seductive women. What’s a James Bond movie without the pussycats?   More »

The trailer for People Like Us is a beautiful and touching story about a man knee deep in debt who must give $150,000 of his father’s inheritance to a sister and nephew he’s never met. Buried in the main story is a tale about a man torn between using the $150,000 or part of it to cover his debt or give it to two people he never knew.   More »

Other Than Stripping Scenes, Magic Mike Fizzles

Magic Mike is an extremely simple storyline about an experienced stripper, Magic Mike – Channing Tatum, training a new stripper about stripping and women. Simple story is fine, but the conversations, the scenes, other than the stripping, and the side stories are dry and boring. There is no emotional draw to the characters and no uphill battle to fight.   More »

Madagascar 3 Only Half Entertaining

DreamWorks seemed to have found a formula that worked for their animations and they haven’t changed it yet. Madagascar 3, their latest installment about a group of goof-ball animals trying to find their way home to New York City’s Central Park, includes the same format. The movie entertains by having animals doing physical comedy and silly slapstick humor using catchy and upbeat music. How can you forget -- “I like to move it move it!”   More »
