There were absolutely no surprises in the way this weekend’s charts played out. The only new release this weekend was the first quality release in several weeks, and it is one of the bigger titles dropping this summer—there was really no contest. This weekend belongs to Dawn of the Planet .

Critics can lament the utter lack of quality in this film (and any other, for that matter) all that they want, but if anything can be learned from how this weekend’s charts played out, it’s this: a lack of quality can be utterly negated by enough hype and notoriety in this film industry.

This looks to be yet another busy weekend—both new releases are sequels that have been long-awaited by fans of the original films for months on end, and both films have been receiving excellent reviews. Additionally, the films will attract very different audiences, so droves of moviegoers will flock to theaters this weekend.
