'Captain America 3' Adds Robert Downey, Jr.; Will Kick Off Marvel's 'Civil War' Storyline

When Robert Downey, Jr. sent film sites around the world into a frenzy last week by intimating -- and then backpedaling very quickly -- the idea that he might be in talks for Iron Man 4, we held off on writing up any of the action, mainly because it seemed like Marvel might have an actual announcement hiding up its sleeve.

Ever since it was announced that Captain America 3 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would be sharing the same crowded release date on May 6, 2016, we've all been wondering who'd blink first -- Marvel, hoping to avoid sequel fatigue with the third installment in its Captain America franchise, or Warner Bros., seeking to dodge having a Marvel-sized bite taken out of the most important release on its calendar for the year.

Marvel has done a pretty solid job of porting over the expansiveness of its print universe onto the big screen, but they've still merely hinted at the edges of that potential. That sounds like it might be changing, however, when Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters next month.

Marvel Has a Secret Thanos

We know Thanos is looming in the distance as the major baddie in Marvel's Phase Three movies, with his next appearance scheduled to take place in this summer's Guardians of the Galaxy (presumably to be followed by a major role in The Avengers 3). What we don't know is who's going to play him -- but as always, Marvel is a step ahead.

We already knew Marvel had shifted into gear on a third Captain America movie, bringing back the franchise's current directing team, Joe and Anthony Russo, to work their magic on the next installment in the series. But now that Captain America: The Winter Soldier has opened to a massive two-week worldwide gross of $303 million, the studio has dropped another card on the table, dating Captain America 3 for May 6, 2016.
