Massive 3D Debut in China Pushes "Jurassic Park" Past $1B in Worldwide Box Office

Last week, I mentioned how the 3D re-release of Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” in China will eventually push the film past $1B in total worldwide gross. Well, it only took six days. The sci-fi thriller debuted with a massive $6.6M when it opened on August 20th. As of Sunday, six days after its opening, “Jurassic Park” took in $28.8M, pushing its worldwide total to $1B.

Chinese audiences just can’t get enough of 3D. Before its release in China, Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” needed another $30M or so to get to a worldwide gross of $1B. Based on its performance on opening day in China, looks like it’ll get there in a week or so.

It’s a curious decision by George Lucas to re-release the “Star Wars” prequels in 3D, starting with “Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace.” They’re not exactly beloved by fans, most of whom think those films tarnished the original trilogy’s legacy.

Titanic set for 3D re-release next year on the 100th anniversary of the ship setting sail – TITANIC is one of those movies that seemed good when it came up but after the hype dies down and you revisit it a few years later...well, not so good. In fact, I've never watched TITANIC again since the first time I saw it in theaters in 1997. But Paramount, Fox and James Cameron are hoping that I'm in the minority.
