It had an infamously difficult birth, but World War Z racked up more than $500 million in theatrical grosses, so Paramount is doing the only thing it can do: moving forward with a follow-up. And now, in addition to a leading man and new director, that sequel has a screenwriter.

After a $540 million plus take at the global box office, World War Z is moving forward with the obligatory sequel. The Orphanage's helmer J.A. Bayona has been tapped to direct the World War Z 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Looks like he's responsible for developing the story for the sequel since he's overseeing the writing of the script.

Should there is a sequel to World War Z, Marc Forster will not be back to direct it, which is not a surprise given the first movie's troubled production. While a sequel is not imminent, they are exploring ideas. "We have a lot of ideas we will cull from," Brad Pitt says.

Based on its troubled production, World War Z was supposed to bomb at the box office, but a Hail Mary attempt to rescue the movie worked out, and the movie ended up making over $539 million at the global box office. Now, sequel talks are underway.

The 'World War Z' Sequel Won't Have Marc Forster as Its Director – After weathering a plethora of bad buzz to become an unlikely box office success, Brad Pitt-starring zombie flick "World War Z" quickly earned itself a sequel, with Paramount announcing the follow-up soon after "Z" scored the highest opening of Pitt's career. But while Pitt is on board, one notable name is not: 9 years 9 weeks ago via brucelee

Marc Forster Discusses Scrapped Ending For 'World War Z,' Brad Pitt Says Sequel Ideas Already Brewing – "World War Z," as we noted in our recent look at this year's blockbusters, had a pretty great summer. More that $200 million in the U.S. and another half a billion bucks worldwide is good going for anyone (including Brad Pitt—it's now his highest-grossing film ever), but it's especially good going for a film that many of those in the so-called know had written off as doomed to bomb after a long, troubled production and rumours of extensive, elaborate rewrites and reshoots. 9 years 11 weeks ago via jetli

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: World War Z and The Bling Ring – This week on home video, we've got a pair notably different book adaptations (a biopic of Liberace and a zombie outbreak movie), Sofia Coppola's ripped-from-the-headlines crime drama, and a bunch of limited releases you may not have seen. Then, we've got a couple of scary movies ahead of Halloween (more surely to come in subsequent weeks), and two more choices from The Criterion Collection. 9 years 11 weeks ago via brucelee

After reports of a troubled production, the box office success of Brad Pitt's World War Z caught a lot of people by surprise. Among them are probably the filmmakers themselves. Now, they're scrambling to come up with something for the obligatory sequel. With a worldwide gross of over $536 million, World War Z is, somehow, Pitt's most successful movie to date, but it didn't appear that way when the movie was first screened.

Brad Pitt Talks World War Z Sequel – Brad Pitt recently sat down with Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival and offered a brief update to the state of Marc Forster's possible World War Z sequels. Check out what he had to say."We're certainly talking about it, yes. We have so many ideas on the table from just the time we spent developing this thing and figuring out how zombie worlds work. 9 years 12 weeks ago via brucelee

Weekend Box Office Report: 'Despicable Me 2' Demolishes 'Lone Ranger'

Despicable Me 2
These past couple weekends have been dominated by family films—this weekend especially, there was just no contest between the new releases. While both films made it to the top of the charts, one did so easily, and the other is barely clinging to its spot, with holdout films snapping at its heels.
