TRON: Legacy grossed only $400 million on a reported $170 million budget and didn’t sell a lot of toys either, which left plans of a third TRON movie — tentatively titled TRON: Ascension — up in the air. Back in 2011 when we interviewed director Joseph Kosinski, he said TRON 3 would move forward “if we can come up with the right story and a good reason to return.” A year later it was reported Garrett Hedlund was signed to return, and then Olivia Wilde was reportedly attached as of two years ago.

Disney surprised everyone earlier this year that Tron 3, a sequel to the mediocre 2010 Tron: Legacy, was on the fast-track. Stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to return, along with original director Joseph Kosinski. And then, just as quickly as the sequel materialized, it disappeared. Disney abruptly canceled the film and everyone was left scratching their heads. Why randomly start developing Tron 3 (a movie that, frankly, few were clamoring for) five years after Tron: Legacy only to cancel it just a few short months later?

Trouble in paradise. Multiple sources are reporting that Disney has apparently cancelled Tron 3, or rather, the next sequel to follow Tron Legacy. Though they may not agree with that wording, as THR writes that "the project was never officially greenlit", but in the end Disney has "chosen not to move forward with a third installment in the sci-fi series". A few months ago we also reported that Vancouver was preparing for another Tron shoot later this year, and that it was happening, plans were in place, and things were heading towards that potential start. However, that's no longer the case.

When TRON: Legacy released in 2010 it didn’t exactly have audiences clamoring for a follow-up. Sure, fans of the franchise were excited to see the Grid rendered with today’s more advanced computer graphics and effects, but even the most die-hard of TRON fans were left disappointed by its mediocre story and characters.

Joseph Kosinski revs up his light cycles againWell here's a surprise. Given the lacklustre critical and box-office performance of Tron: Legacy, and the eerie silence in place of any news about a follow-up, you might have assumed that Disney had quietly put the project to bed. But almost two years since we last heard anything, it now turns out that Joesph Kosinski's cameras will roll on the threequel in Vancouver this autumn. Local Vancouver newspaper Vancity Buzz got the scoop, which has since been backed up by Badass Digest.
