Box Office Prediction Showdown: The Results for Oct. 28–30

Now that the weekend is over and the box office results are in, let's see how our three box office predictors did.

Box Office Report: 'Puss in Boots' Braves Halloween Weekend to Collect a Record $34 Million – Justin Timberlake's "In Time" and Johnny Depp's "The Rum Diary" don't scare up much business, but "Tintin" made a mark overseas. Competing against Halloween parties and contending with an unseasonal blizzard in the Northeast, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots, distributed by Paramount, purred its way to the top spot at the North American boxoffice with an estimated $34 million.

Box Office Report: 'Puss in Boots' Wins Friday With $9.6 Mil Record Halloween Weekend Opening – The DreamWorks Animation-Paramount toon is headed for a $38 million debut; Justin Timberlake-Amanda Seyfried's "In Time" has a so-so bow, while Johnny Depp's "The Rum Diary" falls flat. 10 years 48 weeks ago via brucelee

Box Office Prediction Showdown: 'Puss in Boots' wins by a mile

I'm trying a different approach with the box office this week. Instead of reporting what the prognosticators are saying which movies will make what, I'm going to see which of these crystal-ball-gazing fortune tellers came closest to getting it right.

Critics Consensus: Puss in Boots is the Cat's Meow – This week at the movies, we've got a swashbuckling feline (Puss in Boots, with voice work from Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek), a gonzo journalist (The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp and Aaron Eckhart), and monetary mortality (In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried). What do the critics have to say? 10 years 48 weeks ago via theothersenhman

Critical Consensus: Sundance-Winning Romance "Like Crazy" Is The Pick of the Week – One of the most anticipated American indie releases of the year, Drake Doremus's romantic drama "Like Crazy" is the pick of the week for opening specialty films, according to the folks polled on criticWIRE. Winner of the top prize for U.S. narratives at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, "Crazy" details the at times intensely romantic, at times intensely problematic long-distance relationship between two twentysomethings. 10 years 49 weeks ago via brucelee

Johnny Depp in 'Rum Diary': Sneak peek! – Get an early look at a scene from upcoming film starring Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. 10 years 50 weeks ago via brucelee

Two New Clips from 'The Rum Diary' – Everyone loves a little Johnny Depp playing unhinged and The Rum Diary gives him another go around as with the very unhinged work of Hunter S. Thompson. Based on Thompson's first novel, Depp plays Paul Kemp, a journalist who travels to Puerto Rico to find work and lose himself in a bottle of rum. 10 years 51 weeks ago via jackiechan

Johnny Depp: Harvey Weinstein 'Killed a Great Film' – Depp also says that he makes "stupid money" for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies: "At this point, it’s for my kids. It’s ridiculous." 11 years 1 day ago via jackiechan

Looks like a lot of fun, except I have a hunch that the best scenes are in the trailer. They've thrown scene after scene of humor and drinking in the trailer. Once the diary has been fully disclosed, there's nothing left to long for. Viscerally and esthetically pleasing images without much substance or significance, especially that bejeweled turtle, and the story line seems a little outdated and mundane. Good thing it has a good-looking face and a lively island culture to captivate the audience.   More »
