Since the theaters have been going through a dry spell of sorts for quality films, the first batch of certified fresh releases were able to make a good showing of themselves—one in particular was able to make a good deal above its predicted gross, and easily make its way to the top of the charts.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Planes: Fire and Rescue
Sorry for the lateness, folks! It’s been a busy week on this end—fortunately, it looks like we aren’t missing much: while last weekend was a brief break from the run of mediocre summer titles hitting theaters, it seems the break is over, as this weekend brings a horde of poorly-received releases to the box office.

Review: 'The Purge: Anarchy' Triumphs Where Its Predecessor Tanked Future sequel-makers in the horror field should pay attention to The Purge: Anarchy. The follow-up to last summer's dystopian action/thriller does so much more with what this franchise has been given by writer/director James DeMonaco. With The Purge, DeMonaco envisioned a new America, one with minimal unemployment and even lower crime rate. The annual Purge, 12 hours when all crime, including murder, is perfectly legal, satisfies the animalistic cravings of the population.
