ED-209 "Robocop"
Robocop might have disappointed at the domestic box office, but it’s making up for the difference overseas. With $52M after six weeks in the U.S., the remake looks like it’ll max out at $60M at the end of its run. That’s only slightly better than the original’s $53M, but with nearly ten times the cost.

Disney's "Frozen"
Although The Monkey King and Where Are We Going, Dad? continued to be the top one-two punch at the box office last week in China, From Vegas to Macau is the one with the best word-of-mouth. For the week ending last Sunday (2/3/2014 - 2/9/2014), The Monkey King took in another humongous $74M.

Soi Cheang’s The Monkey King, starring Donnie Yen, Chow Yun Fat, and Aaron Kwok, did even better than initially estimated at the box office. The latest adaptation of Journey to the West opened last Friday in China with an estimated $17M. Turns out the estimate was $3M short. The actual figure is $20M, which makes it the biggest opening day gross of all time, but with an asterix.

In my previous article, I wrote that in order for the $65M budgeted The Monkey King to break even, it would have to reach $150M at the box office in China; and the first thing it must do is break the opening day record.

Donnie Yen in "The Monkey King"
Costing $65M, Soi Cheang’s The Monkey King is the third most expensive movie ever made in China. Starring Donnie Yen, Chow Yun Fat, and Aaron Kwok, the budget for the fantasy/action-adventure film is only surpassed by Zhang Yimou’s $100M The Flowers of War and John Woo’s $75M Red Cliff, which was eventually split into two films to better recoup its then record-high cost.

Donnie Yen Adds Two More to His Busy Schedule: "Ultimate Codebreak" and "The Iceman Cometh"

Donnie Yen’s a busy guy. Over the last few years, he’s been cranking out three movies a year. Just this week, he’s signed on to two more. I kinda lost count of how many he’s attached to since coming back from a six month break.
