The Maze Runner News
Last summer, The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner's dystopian young-adult sci-fi series of the same name, managed to turn a modest budget of $34 million into a surprise hit with a total gross of over $340 million. The film was received well by fans and critics alike and was quickly greenlit for a sequel, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Not too long ago, Entertainment Weekly & People both released three stills each giving us our first look at the film.

With production fast-tracked to meet release next fall, the sequel The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, new cast members were found pretty quickly for the film that finds the surviving group of teens who made it outside of the deadly maze now faced with a new set of challenges for survival in a futuristic world ravaged by devastation and disease. Outside the maze, Dylan O'Brien and his group run into other groups of survivors, some of which will be young (played by Jacob Lofland and Rosa Salazar) and others will be older (with Giancarlo Esposito leading a group called The Cranks).

While just over $30 million domestically may not be anything to brag about for some films, it is enough for 20th Century Fox to greenlight the sequel to THE MAZE RUNNER. With $60 million internationally after it's debut weekend, THE MAZE RUNNER looks to be a moderate success and one the studio is willing to roll the dice on one more time.

Maze Runner Sequel Announced For 2015
Despite things generally slowing down in September, we had a rare up weekend from last year and much of that was thanks to the success of the adaptation of James Dashner's The Maze Runner (20th Century Fox), starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Will Poulter, which scored an estimated $32.5 million for the weekend in 3,604 theaters, averaging $9 thousand per location.

The Maze Runner kicked things off late Thursday evening with $1.1M and then followed that up with a $9.9M Friday. That puts 20th Century Fox's film on pace for an opening weekend north of $30M. Those estimates give it a shot of making back its $34M+ production budget right out of the gate. That's gotta be music to the ears of Fox executives. The film is based on a best-selling young-adult novel and stars Dylan O’Brien from MTV’s Teen Wolf.
