Wait, "The Impossible" Made $172M Worldwide?!

As I was writing about the Chinese box office, where “The Impossible” debuted with a decent $4.7M, I did a double take at its worldwide gross at BoxOfficeMojo.com. It’s a staggering $172M.
I only remembered the film as an indie movie that did indie biz in the U.S. and garnered Naomi Watts an Oscar nomination last year.

While "The Hobbit," "Django Unchained" and "Les Miserables" brought a huge boost to the post-Christmas studio box office, a bunch of platform release holdovers -- namely "Zero Dark Thirty," "Amour," "The Impossible" and "Silver Linings Playbook" -- did the same for the specialty market. However, the two debuting films -- "Promised Land" and "West of Memphis" -- both underperformed.

Lionsgate has slated Summit Entertainment’s The Impossible, the Naomi Watts-Ewan McGregor movie about a family that survived the 2004 tsunami, to open December 21st in New York and Los Angeles. The Spanish-made movie was directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) from a script by Sergio G. Sánchez.
