This last week saw several new releases of varying genres (and, unfortunately, of varying ratings); it is unsurprising, then, that their box office performance is also decidedly varied. Remaining at the top of the charts is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, earning $36.7 million this weekend for an impressive total of over $149.8 million so far (numbers from Box Office Mojo).

New Releases 12-21
Several new releases (and one somewhat-new release) open in theaters this week following the long-awaited advent of first movie in the Hobbit franchise. One of these releases is Judd Apatow’s This is 40, a quasi-sequel to Knocked Up. The film shows the couple from Knocked Up several years later, coping with the hectic day-to-day struggle of parenting, with many a raunchy joke along the way.

Critics Consensus: Jack Reacher Features Tom Cruise in Control

Jack Reacher
rottentomatoes.com – This week at the movies, we've got a cool cop (Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise and Rosamund Pike); harried marrieds (This is 40, starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann); mother-son bonding (The Guilt Trip, starring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen); and a fanciful circus (the performance film Cirque Du Soleil 7 years 5 weeks ago via theothersenhman

Sony Confirms 'Zero Dark Thirty' For Wide Release In 2013; 'The Guilt Trip' Moves Up A Week

Zero Dark Thirty
fb.indiewire.com – Aw, cheer up Sad Chastain. It's not so bad. While New York City and Los Angeles will be graced with Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" as planned on December 19th, as recent reports suggested, the rest of America will have to wait until 2013. Sony has confirmed that the movie will now go wide on January 11th, squaring off against Warner Bros "Gangster Squad" and Marlon Wayans' horror spoof "A Haunted House." While some have suggested the move might indicate a lack of confidence in the picture, we'd wager that's not the case. 7 years 12 weeks ago via jetli

feedproxy.google.com – Our first look at The Guilt Trip starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand (a totally surreal combination of talent), surfaced last month in the form of a simple photo of the mother and son co-stars at the airport. But with the film's Christmas release just around the corner, it's time to amp up the hype machine for the new romantic comedy from The Proposal director Anne Fletcher and Crazy Stupid Love writer Dan Fogelman. 7 years 16 weeks ago via theothersenhman

moviesblog.mtv.com – Though the idea of pairing Seth Rogen with Barbara Streisand might at first glance seem like a strange one, it turns out that these two are actually a match made in heaven.
