After years of hype, Legendary’s would-be China-U.S. crossover epic “The Great Wall” crumbled at the box office, earning just $18.1 million during its opening weekend in North America on an estimated $150 million production budget.

‘The Great Wall’ Builds Solid Thursday Box Office Total of $970K Legendary and Universal’s Chinese import “The Great Wall,” starring Matt Damon, made $970,000 in 2,470 locations at Thursday night previews. The film will expand to 3,326 locations on Friday for a Presidents’ Day Weekend that analysts expect will be dominated by last week’s releases, like “The Lego Batman Movie” and “Fifty Shades Darker.” Directed by Zhang Yimou, “The Great Wall” has grossed $171 million in China and an additional $53.5 million from 31 other international markets.

It begins with the standard teaser, before spotlighting each of the main cast members in separate character profiles. This movie has courted a bit of controversy for playing the "white savior" card by casting Matt Damon in the lead, but however you may feel about that, there's no denying the incredible visuals and exciting action shots on display here. The Great Wall: Matt Damon Addresses Whitewashing Controversy It’s no secret that Hollywood has a problem with acknowledging diversity, but Matt Damon was shocked when his upcoming film, The Great Wall,was criticized for “whitewashing” the characters. The Great Wall is the first English-language film from legendary Chinese director Zhang Yimou and boasts a multinational cast. However, the film has been labeled as offensive for its “white savior” stereotyping. At a press conference during New York Comic-Con, Damon responded to the film’s critics.
