Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Given that this week’s set of new releases received overwhelmingly bad reviews (and don’t have quite enough hype to fill the holes left by shoddy filmmaking), the way the charts played out isn’t super surprising—this weekend, the holdover films remained at the top, and the new releases were relegated to lower spots.

The Giver
This weekend brings an interesting mix of new releases to theaters—we have some tongue-in-cheek mindless action, some young-adult dystopian literature-turned-film, and a risqué buddy cop comedy (sort of). The good news: a wide spectrum of genres that would normally attract lots of moviegoers. The bad news: not one of the new releases is getting good reviews, which may scare any moviegoers away.

‘The Giver’ Stars Brenton Thwaites, Oyeda Rush Talk Their 8 ‘Emotionally Draining’ Auditions (Video) “The Giver” filmmakers picked their leads very, very carefully. During a sit-down with TheWrap, the film's young stars Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush discussed how much more extensive their auditions for the Phillip Noyce adaptation of Lois Lowry‘s classic YA dystopian novel were compared to other films. “Usually an audition is 10 or 15 minutes, this one was an hour,” said Rush, who plays Fiona in “The Giver” opposite Thwaites’ Jonas. “This one was an hour. We did it so many times and at the end I was really just emotionally drained.

‘The Giver’ Director, Author on Why Brenton Thwaites’ Jonas Was Aged Up; YA Dystopian Trend (Video) Like many of her book's fans, “The Giver” author Lois Lowry was nervous at first about some of the changes director Phillip Noyce and the filmmakers behind the adaptation had made to her classic YA dystopian novel. Lowry and Noyce sat down with TheWrap to talk about their movie, how it fits into the current landscape of trendy YA dystopian novels and why the lead character Jonas, played by Brenton Thwaites, had been aged up from 12 in the books to 18 in the movie. Review: The Giver

JoBlo - Wed, 2014-08-13 22:25

Review: The Giver PLOT: In a dystopian future world, young Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is chosen by his community to be the new Receiver of Memory. His new mentor will be the previous Receiver – now technically “The Giver” (Jeff Bridges) who introduces him to thoughts, feelings and sensations beyond his wildest dreams. REVIEW: THE GIVER can’t help but feel awfully familiar in the wake of so many dystopian teen sci-fi yarns.... Read More...

Watch: Step Into The World Of 'The Giver' With Jeff Bridges & Meryl Streep With 5 Clips “The Giver” hits theaters this weekend, and if you’re still on the fence about seeing it, these five clips probably won’t help much. At first, we were optimistic about Phillip Noyce’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 pre-YA novel, with the casting of producer-star Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep inspiring a degree of confidence . But each time we get a closer look, the thing looks more and more like a paint-by-numbers dystopian teen disgrace. The most interesting morsel here is a peek at Taylor Swift in her small role as a former “receiver” who now only exists in memory.

‘The Giver’ Review: Color and Character Bloom in a Black-and-White World The Weinstein Company Since Lois Lowry‘s The Giver was published 21 years ago there’s been an abundance of YA novels that have explored similar territory, likely inspired by her ubiquitous summer reading assignment. Director Philip Noyce‘s film is at a disadvantage in that regard, playing catch up on a trend launched partly by the material he’s adapting.

CS Video: Jeff Bridges and the Cast of The Giver In the world of Lois Lowry's The Giver, there are no colors, no emotions and no memories. Society has moved past them all, creating a world that, though free from disease, war and famine, has become permanently numb to the human spirit. The old ways of mankind are not wholly forgotten, however, thanks to the role of the Giver, one individual whose job it is to maintain the memories and, when the time is right, to pass them along to a receiver, a young man whose job it will be to become the new Giver.

The Giver
The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly...
