"Flying Swords of Dragon Gate" Broke Even; "Flowers of War" Became Top Grosser of 2011

Tsui Hark and the company who invested $35M into “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” held a celebration earlier this week when it pass $50M at the box office in China. Apparently, the film has broken even. I had always wondered what amount it would take for a film to break even at the box office in China.

Zhang Yimou’s “The Flowers of War” (Christian Bale) and Tsui Hark’s “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” (Jet Li) dominated the Chinese box office for another week. Both films saw an improved second outing during Christmas week, which is one of the better movie-going periods in China.

The numbers are in. Round one of the Zhang Yimou vs. Jet Li match-up goes to the director. "The Flowers of War" collected $23.05M at the box office in China last week during its first four days, narrowly beating the $21.47M by "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate." Although both are huge openings and probably new highs for Yimou and Li respectively, they didn’t break any records.

When I first heard that Jet Li and Tsui Hark, both of whom collaborated on the “Once Upon a Time in China” series, are re-uniting to make another martial arts epic, I was of course pretty excited.
