This time, he reports on how Zhang Yimou and company will recoup the $90M production cost for “The Flowers of War.” Instead of splitting up the movie into two like what John Woo did with the $75M “Red Cliff,” they would charge people more to see it.

When it was announced that Zhang Yimou’s “The Flowers of War” was budgeted at over $100M, I thought he would have to split the film in two (or three) in order to recoup its cost. That’s what John Woo had to do with the $75M budgeted “Red Cliff” in 2008. The highest grossing Chinese film in China then was Yimou’s “Curse of the Golden Flower” with $37M.
