Weekend Box Office Report: 'Battle of the Year' Loses the Battle of the Box Office, 'Prisoners' Captures Top Earnings

Despite its star-studded cast, it’s difficult to imagine that the dance film Battle of the Year would do much more than meet its rather small projected gross for the weekend. It was not even able to do that, however, and its counterpart in the new releases this weekend was the only one to pull its predicted earnings.

All signs pointed to this being a sleepy weekend in theaters—there were two films coming out, neither of which saw a lot of hype (or even a decent critical review), and neither of which were expected to pull in big revenues. However, both films came out swinging, and earned far above their predicted grosses.

This batch of new releases seems to promise another sleepy weekend in the box office—the two movies coming out today have received a lukewarm-at-best reaction from critics, and are not predicted to pull in a whole lot of revenues over the weekend.

The first trailer for Luc Besson's mob comedy The Family is here. The movie stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones in a story about a mob family getting relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. Check it out below. De Niro plays Giovanni Manzoni, who along with his wife (Pfeiffer) and two teenage children (Dianna Agron and John D'Leo) try to adjust to their new life in France, but, as we can see, old habits die hard.
