I just read Pamela McClintock’s mid-year box office report on Hollywood Reporter. I had a feeling that this year’s box office was doing pretty good, especially with surprise hits from the get go, like “The Devil Inside,” “Chronicle,” “The Woman in Black,” and “Act of Valor.” Those films grossed in the $50M-$70M range and were released during the first two months of the year.

I'll save you the suspense: the answer is yes. The Amazing Spider-Man opened on Tuesday, just a day before the Fourth of July holiday, to the tune of $35 million at the box office and has made a total of $75 million after Thursday.
