I wasn’t a fan of rebooting the “Spider-Man” franchise so early, but Sony Pictures had to do it to keep the rights from reverting back to Marvel after they couldn’t work out a deal with director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire to return for more sequels.

We won't get our first look at the cinematic Sinister Six until The Amazing Spider-Man 2 touches down on May 2. But behind the scenes at Sony Pictures, the wheels are already turning on the bad-guy supergroup's first standalone feature -- in fact, the studio is close to reaching an agreement with screenwriter Drew Goddard to direct.

Sony Continues Searching for 'Ghostbusters III' Director

For years, it seemed as though Dan Aykroyd was the only person who seriously wanted another Ghostbusters sequel. Now it's clear that the executives at Sony share his fervor for a new chapter in the franchise, but it looks like they'll have to do it without the writing-directing duo that appeared to be their first choice to bring the series back from its 25-year (and counting) hiatus.

Jaden Smith
You may have forgotten all about the Jaden Smith-led Karate Kid re-whatever that Sony put out in 2010, but the studio hasn't, and they've just proven it by signing a director to help bring them a sequel.

Superhero franchises have an obvious appeal -- for actors and filmmakers alike -- but they also seem to be the kind of thing that, with relatively few exceptions, a star or director needs to move on from relatively quickly, and three movies seems to be a pretty common stopping point for most people.

'Zorro' Returning with 'Dark Knight'-Style Reboot

Zorro
It's been awhile since we've seen Zorro making derring-do on the big screen -- since 2005's The Legend of Zorro, to be precise -- and to be honest, we'd long since assumed the property had returned to the Hollywood graveyard. But where there's a franchise, there's someone waiting to greenlight a new movie, and so we've arrived at the place where Sony has started making preparations for a Zorro reboot.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
Remember when studios tried to hide as many details as possible about their upcoming major movies? Sony doesn't, at least not where Amazing Spider-Man 2 is concerned -- and their latest information leak concerns the appearance of one of Spidey's most persistently nefarious villains.

Robocop's Worldwide Box Office Reaches $31.5M

Joel Kinnaman in "Robocop"
Robocop opened a couple weeks ago in Asia to take advantage of the Chinese New Year holidays and took in a solid $5.5M from three small territories. I can see why after a press screening. One of the key locations in the film is China, although I think Hollywood needs to think just a bit harder than rice paddies to represent the country.

The Robocop reboot opened on Chinese New Year with a strong $5.5M in three territories in Asia. It topped the box office in Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore, according to Deadline.com. Studios behind big-budget blockbusters are opening their films in foreign markets ahead of their U.S. release with more regularity nowadays.

The Monuments Men and One Woman

The publicity people at Sony have created a viral tumblr out of the journal of one the film’s characters. Claire Simone (played by Cate Blanchett) is based on a real life curator who took to espionage to recover works of art confiscated by the Nazis. This tumblr features excerpts from her “journal” and images from the film and could be a great lure to people interested in the real WWII drama on which the film’s based.
