Call it the Wright-Jenkins Problem. It’s the state of tension between Marvel and a director with a strong vision. Obviously it’s not something unique to the superhero studio (directors have been leaving projects over “creative differences” since cameras were invented), but this particular problem is inherent in the way that Marvel has done business since launching Iron Man.
Contrary to the current narrative, the issue of clashing directorial minds doesn’t stem from Marvel wanting or calling up work-for-hire filmmakers.

Even though you can probably still catch Selma in some theaters right now, Paramount Pictures is sending the Best Picture nominee back to even more theaters starting this weekend in honor of the 50th anniversary of the historic march depicted in the drama. And the good news is that if you go see Selma during the encore engagement (find out where it will be playing right here), when you buy one ticket, you'll get one free. This is a beautiful, powerful drama, and if I had seen it before the end of last year, it would have been in my Top 10 Films of 2014.

We're days away from the Oscars, and this year has been one that has seen a lot of controversy emerge over the lack of diversity and representation among the nominees. The very well-reviewed "Selma," in particular, cited as a "snub" with only two nods (Best Picture, Best Original Song). It's a complex issue, a conversation that is ongoing in Hollywood, and one that needs thoughtfulness in its approach.
