Review: Safe Haven (Super Hot Makeout Scene Makes Lame Drama Worthwhile)

Boston is a dangerous place in Safe Haven the new drama by the god of paint-by-numbers romances, Nicholas Sparks. The way Lasse Hallström (Cider House Rules) shoots it you’d think Bean Town was as hostile an environment as Katie’s abusive marriage.

Identity Thief
It’s a generally-accepted expectation of new releases to reel in top numbers at the box office on their opening weekend—this week, that was not the case. This weekend, the top spot was occupied by a holdout from three weeks ago: Identity Thief, which pulled in $14 million, for a very respectable total of over $93.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

A Good Day to Die Hard
Despite the paltry reviews most of this last week’s releases received, they all made a somewhat respectable showing for themselves at the box office. First and foremost among the new releases is A Good Day to Die Hard, which grossed $25 million over the weekend, for a total of $33.2 million (as the film first opened in theaters on Valentine’s Day).

Holiday Box Office: 'Die Hard' limps to top spot with $38.7 mil; 'Save Haven' surprises with $34 mil

A Good Day to Die Hard – Paced by underperforming "A Good Day to Die Hard," Presidents Day weekend box office was down 10% from last year and, ominously, couldn't even match 2009-11. However, there were a few bright spots, notably Relativity Media's "Safe Haven." Leading the charge, Fox's Bruce Willis starrer "A Good Day to Die Hard" grossed an estimated $33 million Thursday-Sunday.

A Good Day to Die Hard
We’ve a sizeable batch of new releases this week—and between an action film sequel, a dramatic romance, a mystical-young-adult-book-turned-movie, and a cutesy animated film, there’s something for everyone, provided you’re not too choosy about film quality.

Box Office Report: 'Safe Haven' Narrowly Beats 'Die Hard' to Win Valentine's Day With $9 Million – The Nicholas Sparks pic stars Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel; the fifth installment in the Bruce Willis action franchise earns $8.3 million and should still win the long President's Day weekend. 9 years 13 weeks ago via theothersenhman

Box Office Report: 'Die Hard 5,' 'Safe Haven' in Close Valentine's Day Race – Couples celebrating the holiday are flocking to the latest Nicholas Sparks film adaptation, but "Die Hard 5" will easily win the long Presidents Day weekend. 9 years 14 weeks ago via jetli

Everything that’s twisted in the beginning of the month gets ironed out by the end but, as usual, the films out each week seem to follow a train of thought. February 1: Lotsa “Judgment”
