"The Grey" Exceeds Expectations, "One for the Money" Loses Steam, Decent Holds for "Underworld: Awakening" and "Red Tails"

The weekend estimates are here, and there are a some surprises. “The Grey,” a survival thriller featuring fisticuffs between Liam Neeson and wild animals, did better than expected. It started Friday with an estimate of $5M-$6M, but the final figure ended up being $6.5M. Good reviews probably helped. When the weekend was done, it hauled in $20M, which is a few million better than what box office pundits have predicted.

This week at the box office, both “Underworld: Awakening” and “Red Tails” performed at the upper end of predictions. “Haywire” did as predicted, but gets trashed by audiences.

With Red Tails, George Lucas is out to prove that a blockbuster with an all-black cast can make good money, and ticket sales on Fandango suggested he may be right. As of Friday, ticket sales on Fandango for Red Tails is nearly twice that of Underworld: Awakening, the box office favorite this weekend.


'Underworld' Shoots Down 'Red Tails' on Friday – The late week indications that Red Tails might pull off an upset this weekend proved to be unfounded, as Underworld Awakening easily took first place at the box office on Friday.
