This is another jam-packed weekend, with an almost comical variety of films opening in theaters: a drama that takes itself too seriously, a comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously enough, a decent drama with a strong religious streak, and a Disney nature documentary.

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

First Images from Wally Pfister's TRANSCENDENCE Starring Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, and Morgan Freeman – Earlier this week, we got the official synopsis for Transcendence, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (Inception), and now the first images have gone online. The film revolves around a group of scientists trying to build the first self-aware supercomputer, and when lead researcher Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) becomes the target of anti-technology extremists, he unexpectedly becomes a participant in his own transcendence. 8 years 41 weeks ago via brucelee

New in Theaters: 'One Direction: This is Us,' 'Getaway,' 'Closed Circuit'

This weekend brings in three new releases that, unfortunately, don't have a lot to offer most audiences--the best-rated film entering theaters has a very narrow range of appeal, and the other two releases have not fared very well under the eye of critical scrutiny. Most people heading to theaters this weekend will probably opt for holdover films, rather than these new releases.

In the international suspense thriller CLOSED CIRCUIT, a high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers (Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall) on the defense team – testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.

Watch: Everything Is On Tape In First Trailer For 'Closed Circuit' Starring Eric Bana & Rebecca Hall – It's going to be a long summer of explosions, CGI and dick jokes, as your stomach sours from too much buttery popcorn and your brain hurts endless 3D spectacles. But capping off the season will be a movie that will hopefully have some smarts, and it least promises some strong talent, in a compelling picture.

'Iron Man 3' Review: What's Under the Shell?

7:38 PM 5/3/2013 by Jeff Giles
Iron Man 3
If first acts counted for everything, then Iron Man 3 would be a flawless five-star extravaganza of comic book fun: A sequel that starts off by accentuating its franchise's ruthlessly charming star, a fleet-footed action flick that drives the viewer around the world and sets up the stakes before the first 10 minutes have elapsed, and a tightly scripted, quip-laden techno-farce with loads of physical comedy, no shortage of off-handedly funny pop culture references, and even a little thought-provoking subtext in the bargain.
