Friday Box Office: 'Zero Dark Thirty' Spectacular In Limited Expansion; 'Promised Land' Struggles

fb.indiewire.com – After three weeks of holding tight in 5 theaters, Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" expanded to 60 theaters this weekend and showed no signs of slowing down. On Friday night the acclaimed, controversial film grossed $825,000 for a $13,750 average. That puts it on track for a weekend gross in the $2.2-$2.5 million range, which would give it a stunning average of over $40,000. 7 years 31 weeks ago via theothersenhman

Promised Land
The first week of 2013 offers two radically different new releases: a slasher-horror film and a political drama. Opening today is Texas Chainsaw 3D, a sequel to the infamous 1974 horror film of almost the same name.

Zero Dark Thirty
fb.indiewire.com – While "The Hobbit," "Django Unchained" and "Les Miserables" brought a huge boost to the post-Christmas studio box office, a bunch of platform release holdovers -- namely "Zero Dark Thirty," "Amour," "The Impossible" and "Silver Linings Playbook" -- did the same for the specialty market. However, the two debuting films -- "Promised Land" and "West of Memphis" -- both underperformed.

Les Miserables

Les Misérables, the 2012 adaptation of the classic musical, came to theaters this Christmas, telling the tale of Jean Valjean, a prisoner who escaped parole and promises to care for Cosette, the daughter of factory worker Fantine, all set against the backdrop of 19th-century France.

Review: Promised Land (Sold for Beads)

Promised Land
Steve Butler (Matt Damon) buys gas-rich land from farmers and he’s so successful the natural gas company is grooming him for VP. How does he do it? He’s a country boy like his customers, he’s earnest, principled, well-spoken—but that’s not why. He thinks he’s selling farmers salvation. Steve's posture about the hell of farm life and the nirvana of the civilized social hub is inherently tragic.
