Disney And Amazon In Fight Over Captain America And Maleficent Blu-rays There is a standoff in the works here between Disney and Amazon over the contract terms for selling some of Disney’s biggest DVD/Blu-ray titles including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Maleficent, Million Dollar Arm and Muppets Most Wanted. The on-line retailer will have the right to sell the instant videos but not the DVD or Blu-ray copies according to Deadline. Consumers will have to go to other retail options like Best Buy or Target to purchase those unless the dispute is resolved.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Transformers’ Takes the Weekend By Storm

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Critics can lament the utter lack of quality in this film (and any other, for that matter) all that they want, but if anything can be learned from how this weekend’s charts played out, it’s this: a lack of quality can be utterly negated by enough hype and notoriety in this film industry.

‘Maleficent’s Robert Stromberg Now Most Successful In Losing Helming Virginity – With Maleficent reaching $521 million, Robert Stromberg has set the global box office record for the biggest-grossing live-action directing debut. He has toppled Joseph Kosinski, whose first outing Tron Legacy grossed just slightly more than $400 million worldwide. Stromberg far outpaces Rupert Sanders, who came up just short of passing Kosinski when he directed Snow White And The Huntsman, which grossed $396 million. 6 years 13 weeks ago via jetli

Think Like a Man Too
With this weekend’s releases receiving such mediocre reviews, it looked like it would be a good weekend for the more popular holdover films. However, one of the new releases still managed to make its way to the top, despite all the criticism leveled at it. Still, it was a narrow thing—the holdover films were not far behind.

Weekend Box Office Report: ’22 Jump Street’ Hops Up to Top Spot

22 Jump Street
This may be the first time in history that a highly-anticipated (not to mention highly-rated) animated film was topped in earnings by a fellow new release—and an R-rated comedy, to boot. Still, despite the less varied audience, 22 Jump Street managed to top the charts.

Dark Doctrine: The Rape Of "Maleficent" – Disney's recently released family fantasy epic "Maleficent" has led to interesting conversations amongst film critics about its content. Specifically it's the fairly blatant rape metaphor at the start that there have been issues with, especially for a Disney-branded film that is essentially marketed for young teens. SPOILERS AHEAD The scene in question sees long separated childhood friends Stefan (Sharlto Copley) and Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) reuniting. 6 years 15 weeks ago via donnieyen

Weekend Box Office Report: 'TFiOS' Conquers

The Fault in Our Stars
As much as critics bemoan the continued release of young adult movies, the industry will not slow down for years and years to come, for one simple reason: they make lots of money, provided the cast and crew do a decent job. This weekend illustrated this point nicely, especially since the movie in question was actually very well-received.

“Maleficent” made just about $70 million for Disney in the U.S. alone last weekend, more or less guaranteeing that it will become a valuable franchise for the company, with all the merchandising and extra programming that such a property entails.
