Weekend Box Office Report: 'Ride Along' Remains King of the Hill

Even on a Superbowl weekend, where thousands of people opt to stay home and watch the fabled game, the reigning champ of the last few weekends, Ride Along, managed a third weekend perched comfortably atop the charts, pushing aside the meager new releases.

This weekend features an interesting pair of new releases in the two classic veins--one comedy, one drama, and both with a touch of romance. What these releases lack, however, is the quality necessary to make this a truly interesting batch of releases: decent ratings.

An adaptation of the book by Joyce Maynard, Labor Day has the potential to be enormous as mommy porn but maligned as Oscarbait. The film had an Academy Qualifying release on December 27th in Los Angeles, but distributor Paramount reportedly forewent the traditional NY screenings for qualification, perhaps owing to the wealth of critic screenings there.
