Journey to West: Conquering the Demons
In the second largest film market of the world, Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons is the top film of 2013, grossing a monstrous $206M. It’s the second highest-grossing Chinese film of all time, just a few million behind 2012’s Lost in Thailand. What makes this even more remarkable is that Stephen Chow doesn’t appear in the film; he only directed.

Stephen Chow
"Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" was a surprise hit in China when it opened a couple months ago on Chinese New Year. Sure, it was a big-budget New Year's film that has Stephen Chow's name attached. He is a name brand and is a proven draw at the box office in China - "CJ7" and "Kung Fu Hustle" did $26M and $20M respectively during years when those figures were considered blockbusters.

Chinese Box Office: "Finding Mr. Right" Nudges "Die Hard 5" Off Top Slot; "Ip Man: Final Fight" Disappoints

Finding Mr. Right
In last week's report, I was expecting "Ip Man: Final Fight" to do well enough to at least place second at last week's box office (3/18-3/24), but that didn't happen. It debuted at fifth place with just $1.17M, not even good enough to beat the three-week-old martial arts comedy "Princess and Seven Kung Fu Masters."

A Good Day to Die Hard
"A Good Day to Die Hard" and "Resident Evil: Retribution" debuted in China last week, and the results for the fifth entries of both franchises were solid. Both films have underperformed in the States: "Retribution" grossed $42.3M last fall, about $20M less than the previous installment; "Die Hard 5" will likely finish around $70M, about $60M less than its predecessor.

Chinese Box Office: "Journey to the West" Run Extended So It Can Break "Lost in Thailand"'s Record

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons
In my previous Chinese box office report, I wrote that Stephen Chow's "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" would get close, but not beat "Lost in Thailand" for the record of highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. Huayi Brothers, the company behind "Journey to the West," apparently agrees with me.

Chinese Box Office: Even "The Hobbit" Can't Stop "Journey to the West"

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
A couple weeks ago, Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” needed about $40M to reach $1B in worldwide box office. Chinese audiences answered by purchasing enough tickets in the last few weeks to help the fantasy film pass the $1B mark, the fifteenth film ever to do so. Although “The Hobbit” has done strong business in China for the past few weeks, it was still unable to dislodge Stephen Chow’s juggernaut “Journey to the West:

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons
You know when a market’s hot? When box office records are shattered on a regular basis. Just a couple months ago, “Painted Skin 2: Resurrection” still held two regional box office records: the highest grossing Chinese film of all-time and the biggest opening day gross of all time for a Chinese film.

Second Teaser For Stephen Chow's Journey To The West Brings Footage, Punchline

bleedingcool.com – Our first look at Stephen Chow and Derek Kwok‘s Journey to the West was a pretty simple, announcement-style teaser. This time we get some actual footage from the film and, at the end, a rather Chow-like gag that made me make a proper noise. That superb music from the first trailer is back too.
