It's become something of a scapegoat for Hollywood's current love affair with loud, effects-reliant, mostly soulless tentpole pictures, but CGI spectacle isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's only when filmmakers use it to try and distract from under-developed ideas that it ends up feeling hollow; like any tool, it's only as effective as its user allows it to be.

I may spoil by suggestion, inference, allusion and omission. That still spoiling? Like Harve Bennett before him, J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek for Paramount. Both took a loved but semi-popular franchise and had to reimagine it to serve the fair-weather fan and the audience who treated the mythology like a religion.

Ever since J.J. Abrams debuted that blink-and-you'll-miss-it clip of Spock in a volcano, we've been wondering how Star Trek Into Darkness would place our favorite Vulcan into seemingly intractable peril. Well, Paramount has just released the first extended clip from the movie, and while it doesn't get into any of that, it does at least give us a longer look at Abrams' Trek sequel -- and of, you know, Spock in a volcano.

Feel like J.J. Abrams is being unreasonable by making you wait until May 17 to see Star Trek Into Darkness? Good news: You'll get to see it earlier than that! A little earlier, anyway -- and provided you live near a theater with one of those fancy-schmancy really big screens.

J.J. Abrams upped the action quotient in a famously talky franchise with his Star Trek reboot a few years ago, and the trailers for the follow-up promise more of the same. But if his latest comments are to be believed, he's also aiming for something a little more sensitive: Your sweet, sweet Trekkie tears.

There's a sizable percentage of the Trekkie fanbase that thinks the Star Trek franchise never needed to boldly go into 3D -- and although Star Trek Into Darkness will boast an added third dimension when it touches down in theaters on May 17, those fans can at least take solace in the knowledge that director J.J.
