J.J. Abrams News
Back in January, we were caught by surprise when J.J. Abrams' Valencia was revealed to be 10 Cloverfield Lane. The producer described it as a "blood relative" of his alien-invasion movie Cloverfield. Without spoiling what happens in the thriller, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, it's safe to say that its mysterious connection to the original added a delightful and very intriguing layer.
Even before 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in March, Abrams told Fandango: "A...Read MoreRead Comments

Just about any movie involving J.J. Abrams begins life in his famous “mystery box,” from intimate thrillers (10 Cloverfield Lane) to record-breaking blockbusters (Star Wars: The Force Awakens). Some of them, however, stay there longer than others. Like the Julius Onah-directed God Particle. We first heard about the project all the way back in 2012, and while we’ve gotten periodic updates on it since then, most of the concrete details remain under lock and key.
As of today, however, we do finally know when all will be revealed.

British actor Simon Pegg (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) recently opened up to the Radio Times about his thoughts on geek culture. While his somewhat controversial rant about the "dumbing down" of modern cinema may have seized headlines, it was his comments about the upcoming Star Trek sequel that made for a far more interesting read. Earlier this year, Pegg was revealed to be co-writing the sequel to JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness, following Roberto Orci's departure from the project.

Maybe one day we’ll get the full story of the behind the scenes drama on Star Trek 3. How people reacted when J.J. Abrams left, the potential directors coming in to pitch, Roberto Orci being hired as a first-time filmmaker, his subsequent departure, a second director search, the hiring of Justin Lin and more. It sounds like plot to a political thriller.

File this one under "Long Shot," but there's currently a groundswell movement to get Jonathan Frakes into the director's chair for Star Trek 3. Frakes is mostly known for his role on the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, where he played Commander William Riker. How far has this little movement gone? Well, Frakes revealed to Komo News Radio that he has contacted J.J. Abrams himself, while his agent has gone to Paramount to try and make a deal. Oh, and there's also a hashtag (of course): #BringInRiker"I'm all over it.

Could Edgar Wright replace him?Eyebrows cranked higher than Mr. Spock's when Roberto Orci – intimately linked with the franchise through co-writing and producing J.J. Abrams’ first two Star Trek films – announced he was directing the third outing for the Starship Enterprise, despite zero helming experience. It’s less of a surprise to report that he’s no longer in the big chair. No reason was given for his departure, but he will be staying on the film as a producer, especially since he’s been overseeing the script he’s co-written with J.D.

According to a report over at Deadline Robert Orci will no longer direct the third Star Trek film. He will remain on board as a producer along with J.J. Abrams. This news likely comes as a relief to fans of the series. When word first hit that a Orci would be cutting his directorial teeth on their favorite film franchise there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Old Testament ashes and sackcloths kind of stuff. While others congenially questioned his ability to transition from a writer of the first two films to a director of the third.
