Weekend Box Office Report: 'Battle of the Year' Loses the Battle of the Box Office, 'Prisoners' Captures Top Earnings

Despite its star-studded cast, it’s difficult to imagine that the dance film Battle of the Year would do much more than meet its rather small projected gross for the weekend. It was not even able to do that, however, and its counterpart in the new releases this weekend was the only one to pull its predicted earnings.

With Insidious: Chapter 2 opening to a $40 million weekend, Entertainment One, FilmDistrict, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions wasted no time in announcing the development of a third movie. Leigh Whannell, who wrote the first two chapters, will return to write the third.

James Wan Probably Not Done With Horror Just Yet, After All

Probably not realizing his words would be splashed all over the interwebs quite so literally, and likely sending Jason Blum into panic, horror master James Wan has already walked back his assertion that he was “finished with the horror genre.” Answering a blogger’s tweet, Wan declares he’s probably not exactly retired from the genre just yet, saying “of course” he will return to his favorite genre:

All signs pointed to this being a sleepy weekend in theaters—there were two films coming out, neither of which saw a lot of hype (or even a decent critical review), and neither of which were expected to pull in big revenues. However, both films came out swinging, and earned far above their predicted grosses.
