Roland Emmerich told us previously that there's a good chance the Independence Day sequel will be arriving in 2016 instead of 2015. Now, it's official. Independence Day 2 was originally scheduled for July 3, 2015, but it has been pushed back a year to July 1, 2016, just in time to celebrate the first movie's 20th anniversary.

'Independence Day 2' Moved to Summer 2016 – Earlier today, 20th Century Fox moved around a bunch of their 2015 releases. One film conspicuously absent was Roland Emmerich‘s sequel, Independence Day 2. Well, it took a few more hours, but now the fate of that movie has been revealed. It’s still coming, but as some suspected, it has been moved back a whole year.

Michael B. Jordan
Michael B. Jordan could be the lead, or one of the leads, in 20th Century Fox's Independence Day sequel, TheWrap has learned. The Fruitvale Station star is just one of the young actors being considered for a major role in the movie, but his name comes up repeatedly in creative meetings, according to sources. This does not mean an offer will go out to Jordan anytime soon, or ever, TheWrap cautions; it's just that he's the current front-runner.

'Chronicle' Actor Michael B. Jordan Being Eyed for 'Independence Day 2' – Since plans to go ahead with Independence Day 2 (re)surfaced last year, information about the highly-anticipated film has slowly trickled in. In June, FOX announced plans to go ahead with a second (and possibly) third installment and confirmed a 2015 release date – a year that is already jam-packed with high profile projects (then again, the most recent report indicated that the sequel may be pushed back to 2016).

Independence Day
Whether Independence Day 3 will get made or not depends entirely on how Independence Day 2 did at the box office, according to director Roland Emmerich. This point is important because ID2 and ID3 is one story told over two movies, with the second one ending in a cliffhanger. Want to know how the story ends, better do your part to prop up that box office figure.

Roland Emmerich Offers 'Independence Day 2' Update; Building Alien Mythology – Who says the 1990s are dead? Not Roland Emmerich, that’s for sure, considering that the German filmmaker – nicknamed “The Little Spielberg from Sindelfingen” – is planning to resurrect his two sci-fi properties from the decade: Independence Day and Stargate. The latter franchise is getting what is nowadays a commonplace reboot treatment (paving the way for a potential new trilogy), while the former will be given a good old-fashioned sequel that will include returning cast members like Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum and maybe Will Smith (if negotiations work out). 8 years 11 weeks ago via donnieyen
