George Lucas put a lot of his own money into making and marketing “Red Tails,” a war epic about a group of African-American pilots who fought against the Germans in World War II. There’s reportedly an hour of spectacular aerial battles. Yet, I don’t think that’s enough to put enough people in seats to make back his investment.

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, then you know that I’m sold on both Steven Soderbergh’s martial arts thriller “Haywire” and George Lucas’s expensive aerial actioner “Red Tails” after watching their trailers. Both films happen to open on the same day: January 20th. (As if that’s not enough action for you, the fourth installment of the “Underworld” franchise launches in the same week too.)

January 2012 Movie Preview: 'Haywire', 'Underworld: Awakening', and more!

If any thing can be said about the first month of the year, it's that January is a great time to catch up on movies you may have missed out on in December. While the studios are preparing their award campaigns, what are released (or dumped, depending how you look at things) in theaters are movies from the horror or thriller genre which would normally be drowned out by more polished products if released during any other month.

'Haywire' Stills

rss.feedsportal.com – Sex, lies and the Uzi 9 millimeter. Anything Jason Bourne (or Aaron Cross) can do, Haywire's Mallory can do just as well. Sure, she's picked the wet and windy rooftops of Dublin instead of the upstairs parts of Tangier - maybe she performs better in the wet, like one of those Formula One drivers who perform better in the wet - but otherwise she's matching Treadstone's finest in the running-and-shooting stakes.Following on from the latest trailer, these new stills from Steven Soderbergh's actioner give another taste of what to expect. 8 years 48 weeks ago via jackiechan
