Paramount Planning 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' Sequel
2:25 PM 3/18/2013 by Jeff Giles
Here in the U.S., Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters went down as one of the more disappointing duds of early 2013, eking out a mere $54 million against its $50 million budget even after extensive promotion (and, perhaps more importantly, an extra few months in the studio vault). But overseas, it was a different story; in fact, with its global box office total now across the $200 million mark, Witch Hunters is a certified moneymaker for Paramount -- and you know what that means.
Paramount Confirms 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters' Sequel In Works

The news comes the same day the revisionist fairy tale starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton crossed $200 million at the global box office. That’s a significant milestone and key to the decision to go ahead with a sequel that is now officially in development; Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters made its bones overseas after failing to find traction in North America.

The box office grosses played out very predictably this weekend; this meant good news for one of this last week’s releases, and not-so-good news for the other.
Warm Bodies made the top of the box office chart with a total gross of a little over $20 million (numbers courtesy of Box Office Mojo); given that its ratings were probably better than those of the last two weeks’ other releases combined, this is hardly surprising.

New in Theaters: 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,' 'Movie 43,' 'Parker'

It’s looking to be a pretty dismal for new releases this weekend: three different new films, and not a one of them well-received.
One of these ill-conceived releases is Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, another film putting a new spin on an old tale. Here, fairy-tale children Hansel and Gretel survive their famous encounter with a witch and grow up to face several more monstrosities, and contend with the horrors of their past.
