Ghost in the Shell: Japanese Response to Remake is More Positive Japanese fans are reacting to the live-action adaptation of the country’s iconic manga/anime franchise Ghost in the Shell in a much more positive way than the film is being received by fans in the U.S. The Rupert Sanders-helmed production starring Scarlett Johansson has been plagued in the West by a whitewashing controversy and underwhelming reviews, culminating in a weak $18.6 million in its box office debut last weekend. And despite an additional $40 million take in foreign territories in its opening weekend, some pundits are estimating that the film could lose up to $60 million when

‘Ghost in the Shell’ Animation Project Gets Green Light at Japan’s Production IG Japan’s leading cartoon firm Production I.G. has announced it is working on a new “Ghost in the Shell” anime project. According to the production company’s website, the animation project will be co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (“Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” series) and Shinji Aramaki (“Appleseed Alpha”). Paramount Blames 'Ghost in the Shell' Box Office Flop on Whitewashing Controversy Kyle Davies, the President of Domestic Distribution for Paramount Pictures, is not having a great week. The early eruption of a backlash to his studio’s newest release (the generously-budgeted Ghost in the Shell remake) and its whitewashed casting was cause for concern. But up until recently, he could assuage his shareholders’ worries by clinging to the notion that hackle-raising on the Internet would not have any tangible effects on the box-office receipts. That changed after this past weekend, when the Scarlett Johansson vehicle mustered a piteous $19 million in wide release.

In this entry: Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell.) Ghost in the Shell sometimes feels more preoccupied with how characters are framed than what they’re doing and saying. They usually look and sound fantastic, but rarely do they register as real flesh and blood in director Rupert Sanders‘ adaptation of the classic manga and anime.

Review — ‘Ghost In the Shell’ Is Pretty Except When It’s Not ‘Ghost In the Shell’ Is Pretty Except When It’s NotEye-catching designs and an intriguing performance by Scarlett Johansson aren’t quite enough. It’s a new world, one where cybernetic enhancements are the norm to aid people in everything from vision and movement to the quicker absorption of alcohol, and Major Killian (Scarlett Johansson) is the shiniest toy on the shelf. While others are human with electronic additions, she’s a human brain inside a synthetic shell. A terrorist attack one year earlier left her body ravaged, but thanks to the work of Hanka Robotics and Dr.

How Ghost In The Shell Made Its Own Whitewashing Controversy Even Worse That’s right. We’re going to talk about the W word today. Again. Yes, I know. You’re sick of hearing about it, and so am I. But when dealing with a property so embedded in Japanese culture, it’s impossible to overlook it completely. And it’s even more impossible to overlook after the movie itself drew attention to its own controversy over the course of its runtime.Ghost in the Shell is a film that has been mired in controversy practically from its inception.
