If we’ve learned anything this weekend it’s that mixing Tyler Perry‘s popular Madea character with ghosts is a winning combination.
The writer-director-star of “Boo! A Madea Halloween” brought down the box office this weekend with an estimated $27.6 million as his latest installment in the comedy series opened in theaters.
The Lionsgate movie blew away initial estimates by roughly $10 million, emerging as the top performer ahead of Paramount’s Tom Cruise vehicle “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” — which was initially expected to debut at No.

It was horror versus Keanu at the box office this weekend, with both turning out decent debuts.
In at number 1 is Ouija (read our review) with $20 million. That’s the second best opening of the year for a horror film, behind Annabelle‘s $37 million earlier this month.
Although few expected they would ever see a movie based on the concept, Ouija did fairly well with younger viewers. It should also hold stronger than most thanks to the upcoming Halloween weekend.
The number 2 film this weekend is John Wick (read our review) with $14.1 million.

You know there’s something wrong right off the bat when a movie is based on a board game. It’s just another pitiful extension of Hollywood’s obsession with making movies out of recognizable brands or toys or theme park rides. Sometimes those initially terrible ideas work out (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl), and most of the time they don’t (Battleship, almost all of the Transformers movies).
