It will never stop seeming weird that a film grossing over $200 million domestically (and more than $700 million in all) is viewed as a flop, but the fact remains that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is one of the bigger disappointments of 2014, and its failure to meet expectations at Sony has triggered what's looking more and more like a complete franchise shakeup -- starting with the slew of spinoff projects the studio has planned.

Captain America 3 and the Man of Steel sequel are currently on a collision course, with both of them scheduled to open on the same day in 2016. Since this will trigger the box office apocalypse, look for one of them to blink and move out of the way.

Signing on to direct Sony's The Sinister Six movie means Drew Goddard has to leave Fox's sci-fi movie The Martian, TheWrap has learned. Matt Damon is being eyed for the lead role.

Writer-turned-director Drew Goddard made his directorial debut with Lionsgate's 2012 horror movie The Cabin in the Woods, which got raves and did decent at the box office, so it's almost a sure thing he'll get to do it again. Looks like he found his next project.
