China Box Office: Top Three Still "The Monkey King" ($74M), "Where Are We Going, Dad?" ($52M), and "From Vegas to Macau" ($32M)

Although The Monkey King and Where Are We Going, Dad? continued to be the top one-two punch at the box office last week in China, From Vegas to Macau is the one with the best word-of-mouth. For the week ending last Sunday (2/3/2014 - 2/9/2014), The Monkey King took in another humongous $74M.

For the last three weeks, the box office in China has been dominated by animated features. For the previous week, locally produced Boonie Bears unseated Universal’s Despicable Me 2 with $13.3M. The latter took in $12M. Boonie Bears’s total now stands at $30M. That’s a record for a Chinese animation, beating the $26M total of 2012’s Mission Incredible:

While its weekend gross fell pretty far short of its projected range, the latest Marvel film made a respectable amount of money over the weekend—certainly enough to place it well ahead of the other two new releases (this is hardly an accomplishment, however, as one is an indie film and the other opened in just enough theaters to qualify as a wide release).

'Despicable Me 2' Denied Release in China (Exclusive) – "Despicable Me 2" has been denied a theatrical release in China, TheWrap has learned. It is not clear why the country rejected the film and whether it had to do with censorship issues, but the Universal film -- a juggernaut at the global box office -- will not get a chance to crack the second largest film market in the world, according to a Chinese film executive.
