Weekend Box Office: New Releases 'Snitch,' 'Dark Skies' Topped By Holdout 'Identity Thief'

It’s a generally-accepted expectation of new releases to reel in top numbers at the box office on their opening weekend—this week, that was not the case.
This weekend, the top spot was occupied by a holdout from three weeks ago: Identity Thief, which pulled in $14 million, for a very respectable total of over $93.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

This week’s set of new releases is fairly dark in terms of subject matter—an action film and a suspense-horror thriller. Unfortunately, it's also looking pretty dark in terms of ratings, as well.
Coming out today is Snitch, an action film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a father whose son is framed for drug dealings; the father strikes a deal with the DA to go undercover and risk everything to clear his son’s name.

Blumhouse Productions and Dimension Films have revealed Dark Skies - a new supernatural thriller - is now set to star Keri Russell (Mission Impossible III, Waitress). The film is the latest effort from Priest and Legion helmer Scott Stewart who is directing from a scrip that he penned. Jason Blum (Insidious) is producing through his Blumhouse production banner.
