‘Selma’ Snub Means Diversity Is Still Sparse in a White Hollywood Let’s tell it straight – the Motion Picture Academy snubbed “Selma” on Thursday morning, one of the movies this season that seemed to have passion, momentum and the weight of history on its side. Yes, I know the film won a Best Picture nomination. But it was snubbed in the writing, directing and acting categories. That’s a surprise. Certainly “Selma” is not a perfect film. But few could argue with David Oyelowo’s stirring performance as Martin Luther King, Jr.

Director Ava DuVernay‘s “Selma” and Alan Hicks’ “Keep on Keeping’ On” took home the jury prizes at the 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, with the winners being revealed on Saturday at Spencer’s Restaurant in Palm Springs, California. “Selma,” selected as the award show’s opening night film, took home the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. The story focuses on the U.S. Civil Rights movement in the 1960s and its leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

‘Selma’ Controversy Grows Over LBJ Clash with Martin Luther King On Civil Rights Days away from the wide release of “Selma,” a controversy around the film is gaining steam as historians take issue with its depiction of president Lyndon B. Johnson clashing with Martin Luther King, Jr.

‘Selma’ to Screen in Selma, Alabama for Free “Selma,” the Golden Globe-nominated film about Martin Luther King Jr., will screen for free in the Alabama city that gave the film its title. “With deep gratitude to the people of Selma, Alabama, we are proud to share this powerful film depicting the historic events that took place there 50 years ago,” said Oprah Winfrey on behalf of the film’s producers. Winfrey costars in the movie as an African-American worker who joins the civil rights protests.

Selma Review History students know Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from his speeches, those first bellowed words of “I Have a Dream” universally logged in memory banks. So it makes sense that King's voice is the gateway to the man in Selma, a stirring account of the marches that provoked the 1965 Voting Rights Act's passing. Actor David Oyelowo summons the power and courage to recreate King's calls to action, preaching to the disenfranchised with a Biblical roar. A one-man-show centered on the master orator would satisfy. Oyelowo is that rousing.
