Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons
You know when a market’s hot? When box office records are shattered on a regular basis. Just a couple months ago, “Painted Skin 2: Resurrection” still held two regional box office records: the highest grossing Chinese film of all-time and the biggest opening day gross of all time for a Chinese film.

Sam Mendes’ “Skyfall” starring Daniel Craig opened a couple weeks ago in China and riveted audiences to the tune of $35M in the first week and $16M in the second, for a total of $51M so far. It’s a huge hit in China, unless, like this writer, your views got distorted by the recent records broken by “Lost in Thailand” and “Chinese Zodiac.”

5 Biggest Box-Office Bombs of the Year; Lots of 'Dredd' and No 'Big Miracle,' Especially for 'Oogieloves' – While "Skyfall" is topping the charts and "Breaking Dawn Part 2" looks poised to have box office teeth, 2012 had its share of financial bombs. "The Oogieloves" got no love, Oogie or otherwise, at the box office. The Wachowski-Tykwer magical mystery tour "Cloud Atlas" couldn't float, while Drew Barrymore-starrer "Big Miracle" was exactly the opposite in terms of profits. 10 years 3 weeks ago via theothersenhman

He's looking at you.
Somewhere during the three hour running time, I lost count of the reincarnations. There’s Cambridge 1936, New Seoul 2144, London 2012, Where Ever in the future, When Ever in the past and fair share of “can’t care anymore.” Like a more orderly Babel, Cloud Atlas organizes its constellation of stars to prove our interconnectedness.

Box Office Report: Four New Films Wiped Out, 'Argo' Rises to No. 1 for First Time – The big-budget "Cloud Atlas" opens to a disappointing No. 3 with $9.4 million; Halloween teen comedy "Fun Size" and surfing drama "Chasing Mavericks" bomb, debut outside top 10. Ben Affleck's Argo rose to No. 1 in its third weekend of play at the domestic box office as four new films, including big-budget epic Cloud Atlas, turned in dismal performances. 10 years 5 weeks ago via brucelee

Friday Box Office: ARGO Tops CLOUD ATLAS and SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D Entering Extremely Weak Weekend

Argo – With four new wide releases, you’d think the box office would be primed to close out October with another strong weekend. You’d be wrong. The prospects for the four newbies – including Cloud Atlas and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D - looked shaky even before the so-called ‘Frankenstorm’ trained its eye on America’s East Coast. 10 years 5 weeks ago via donnieyen

Early Box Office: 'Argo' Could Win Slow Weekend Over 'Cloud Atlas,' 'Silent Hill' – New Halloween teen comedy "Fun Size" and Gerard Butler surfing drama "Chasing Mavericks" are faring even worse. 10 years 5 weeks ago via theothersenhman

Critics Consensus: Cloud Atlas Is a Beautiful Mess – This week at the movies, we've got time-spanning connectedness ( Cloud Atlas, starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry); a Halloween escapade (Fun Size, starring Victoria Justice and Chelsea Handler); a legendary surfer (Chasing Mavericks, starring John Weston and Gerard Butler); and a demonic town (Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, starring Adelaide Clemens and Sean Bean). 10 years 6 weeks ago via brucelee

New in Theaters: 'Cloud Atlas', 'Chasing Mavericks', 'Silent Hill: Revelation 3D', 'Fun Size'

Cloud Atlas is one of those movies that makes you question what the heck you just saw after it's over. It will do that during the viewing as well. It's a movie with a BIG IDEAS, but those ideas are not something you can pin down or explain without difficulty. In short, viewers are not going to like Cloud Atlas if they don't like to do mental gymnastics while watching their movies and/or don't like their movies with some a lot of ambiguities.
