Way back in the spring, we learned that Disney XD would bring back the superhero team Big Hero 6 in their own animated series. At the time, all we knew was that it would pick up shortly after the events of the first film and the series would be executive produced by Kim Possible creators Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley along with another Kim Possible vet, Nicholas Filippi, who’ll serve as supervising director.

When Walt Disney Animation decided to bring the Marvel comic Big Hero 6 to theaters, many wondered whether or not there would be ties to the Marvel cinematic universe or if this could be the beginning of a separated animated universe for Marvel superheroes.

Screenwriter Daniel Gerson passed away on Saturday at the age of 49 after battling brain cancer. Gerson co-wrote Monsters, Inc. with Andrew Stanton and worked with Robert L. Baird and Dan Scanlon on Monsters University. He also teamed with Baird and Jordan Roberts for Big Hero Six.
His previously assisted on features Chicken Little, Curious George, Cars, Meet the Robinsons and has credits for TV writing on Big Wolf on Campus, Misguided Angels and The New Addams Family.
Gerson was working on Cars 3 when he passed away.

Disney's Big Hero 6 has earned over $620 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of 2014.
With $221 million of its total coming from the domestic box office, Big Hero 6 is Walt Disney Animation Studios' third biggest domestic release of all time.

It was a timid box office weekend for the new releases, while Clint Eastwood’s latest continues to dominate
In at number 1 is American Sniper with $64.3 million, which brings its domestic total up to $200 million. That’s a 27% holdover from last weekend, which is extremely strong for a film that “opened” with $90M. Given what American Sniper has accomplished already, we wouldn’t be surprised if January became the new “heroic war story” month going forward.
The Boy Next Door comes in at number 2 with $15 million.
