Weekend Box Office Report: 'Battle of the Year' Loses the Battle of the Box Office, 'Prisoners' Captures Top Earnings

Despite its star-studded cast, it’s difficult to imagine that the dance film Battle of the Year would do much more than meet its rather small projected gross for the weekend. It was not even able to do that, however, and its counterpart in the new releases this weekend was the only one to pull its predicted earnings.

Most weekends, the films coming out (if there’s more than one, that is) are fairly different, presumably to attract a larger audience to the box office. Some weekends, this difference is so large as to be almost hilarious: this weekend, which promises a Taken-flavored revenge film and a quirky flick about an Olympic-level dance competition, is one of them.
